Days 15 & 16 St Simon to St. Augustine to Ponce

We woke up early in St. Simon and got underway in the dark. We were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise as we entered the ocean at the inlet.

We arrived in St. Augustine and decided to get a slip in the municipal marina rather than anchoring again. We found this place to be a cross between an amazing historical town and a tourist trap. Some of the buildings are gorgeous.


We met up with fellow AYC members who happened to overlap with our snowbird trip and had a great dinner together last night.

This morning, we missed the 7:00 a.m. bridge opening to get out of St. Augustine and back into the ocean. Not because we weren't ready, but because there was an unscheduled opening at 6:40, and the bridge tender decided he wasn't opening at 7:00, so we had to wait until 7:30. While waiting, we witnessed another great sunrise. There are worse ways to spend half an hour.


As 7:30 approached, we nudged up to the bridge and enjoyed watching it open before we passed through.

After severn uneventful hours in the ocean, we arrived at Ponce inlet and grabbed a slip at the Sea Love marina. We had our choice of seafood restaurant or seafood restaurant for dinner.
And of course, the sun set again tonight.
So, we are in Florida! And we are about 215 miles from Miami with five days left for our target arrival. While we have been extremely lucky with the weather, that will change on Monday. So, we will run outside tomorrow and Sunday, and then the rest of the way, we'll probably go inside or stay put if the weather is really bad. Tomorrow we go to Cape Canaveral, a 63 mile trip in the ocean.

We woke up this morning to another gorgeous moonset and sunrise. Never gets old. Some pics of our surroundings here. Moon set Sunrise I took Gimel to shore on the dinghy for him to relieve himself. We have gotten him to pee on the pads we bought and use up on the bow, but he still doesn't understand about more serious stuff. In a few days, we're going to have a night where he won't have a choice. Avi takes Gimel for a ride to use the "bathroom" The dinghy dock was at the marina pictured below. They normally charge $5, but the said I could take Gimel for free. Empty Nest was ready to keep going South. Every morning, I do my regular engine room check - about 10-15 minutes usually. I check the hydraulic fluid level, the coolant systems for the two main engines, oil level for both engines, both transmissions, and both generators. Miami to Marathon

Well, it took less than 24 hours for me and Ann to realize that we did not like Miami enough to stay there for the whole Winter. Thanks to the helpful/friendly/awesome folks at Oasis marinas, we were able to switch our reservation to the Perry Hotel & Marina in Key West the day before flying home for Thanksgiving. We will take two days to get there. On Tuesday, 11/21, Ann and I flew home, and our kids all came home, and it was wonderful to see everyone! We spent Thanksgiving at Ann's brother's house where we were treated to a beautiful stuffed bird. (and don't worry - there was a whole vegan spread as well). Mark and Laura have twins as well, so here we are after an amazing meal with all 5 kids and the proud parents. Not pictured is Elana's boyfriend Bruno, who took the picture. We flew back to Miami yesterday and were off the dock at 6:20 a.m. this morning. Here we are, leaving Miami at the inlet before the sun was up. We had 2-3 foot following seas. Total pleasure

Marathon to Key West - our new home for the next 3.5 months

We did it! We're here!! Left Annapolis on October 26, and arrived in Key West on November 30, with one week home for Thanksgiving. The craziest, most fun, most exhausting, most challenging, and most rewarding month I can ever remember. After our previous 24 days of travel with surprisingly few hiccups, we had our share of mishaps today in what was supposed to be the easiest and shortest leg of our entire trip. A bit of foreshadowing - it all ended fine. We decided to sleep in, and I did not get up and take Gimel out until 6:30. By comparison, yesterday, we were already under way and entering the ocean at 6:15 a.m. Here was the view from the back of our boat in Marathon before sunrise. And then, inevitably, the sun came out. Here was the very short channel from Marathon out to sea. Throughout the Keys, we saw bridges connecting the islands. As we left the channel and headed into the ocean, I heard "Oh shit!
